Dachau

Today, my last full day in Germany, I chose to visit the former Dachau concentration camp.  Dachau, near Munich, was the first concentration camp set up by the Nazis in 1933. More than 40,000 prisoners died there before it was liberated by US forces on 29 April 1945.

A remnant of the rail line that carried cattle cars full of prisoners to the camp.

I encountered a Syrian mother and her son at the camp.

  1. Jonathan,
Do you know the Holocaust Museum in Skokie? It's mission is an educational one and it is designed to do just that. There is a cattle car in the museum along with other incredible and heartwrenching artifacts. I used to talke my teacher education students there when we were studying social studies methods. I have no doubt that it was transformative. Come home. We all miss you!
